Are you listening to me? Are you really? Are you playing this podcast in the background? Am I background to whatever you are doing? Are you only hearing a few words here and there? Are you listening for meaning? For entertainment? For torture? Are you looking for Distracted Euphoria (you can get that from this show btw)?
Are you listening to what I have to say, or just using my voice to hear what you want to hear?
Honestly, I'm not really listening either. I'm not paying attention to what I'm saying. So I wouldn't expect any more from you.
It doesn't matter how you listen because you probably aren't going to remember this anyway, I know I won't. Science has shown us that memories are not reliable (go head, Google it, I'll wait — you can learn all about how eye witness testimony is unreliable, and other stuff). Sure there are key memories — flash snapshots that exists — but mostly our memories are tainted by time (or at least the illusion of what we think is time), by talking about them, by hearing other people talk about things (not just a particular memory), by our bias, by our hopes and dream, and, of course, by the internet. In my case it's much worse, I'm not even sure if I had dinner tonight. Or what day of the week or year it is. Don't worry I remember major things, like … umm … hmm … never mind.
Now where was I? Guess I should have been listening.
Oh yes! Listening! In cases like this show there isn't a strong need to listen intently and take notes. It's meant to flow through one ear and out your butt. If I say something that strikes a cord with you, that's your cue to listen more intently. But all in all, I don't really listen to you and you don't really listen to me — and that's ok.
Also If you are having suicidal thoughts and need to talk to someone and you don't want to talk with any friends or family, then please contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 24 hours a day. They will talk with you. They will listen. They will not judge. If you don't want to talk, but like to do an online chat, they do that too just Google "suicide" and you'll find it.
